The beach and sea are relatively sheltered and so perfect for windsurfing and kayaking – top rated surfing beaches are only a short drive away too. Behind the cottage are rugged mountains, moorlands and lochs, perfect for walking or a spot of fishing. Uig is steeped in history and spoilt with stunning views at every turn…
Local Uig facilities
The Uig community shop and petrol station are approximately 1.5 miles away. The shop stock all essentials from bread to washing powder and also houses the local post-office. The nearest main supermarkets (Tesco and Co-op) are in Stornoway. Uig has two eateries, Uig Sands Restaurant and The Edge’ cafe at Aird Uig.
Ardroil beach
The huge, pristine sands of Ardroil are the perfect place to blow away the cobwebs. Stretching over a vast area at low tide the beach is a stunning place for a walk, or to indulge in sporting activities like kayaking or windsurfing. The water is surprisingly warm in comparison to much of the UK throughout the summer months and great for swimming. Due to Uig’s remote location it never gets busy and it is common to have the beach completely to yourself.
Walking in Uig
Uig is blessed with some of the most spectacular scenery in the whole of the UK and there are many stunning walks you can take right from Corncrake’s front door. Flora & Fauna
The unspoilt and remote wilderness of Uig is a haven for wildlife on land, in the air and in the sea. We have an abundance of deer, otters, migratory and resident birds including Sea Eagle, Golden Eagle and or course corncrake, rare flora and thriving sea life. It is not uncommon for seals, dolphin and basking sharks to visit Uig. The best way to see the marine life up close is on a boat trip with Sea Trek which runs excursions from its base just 10 minutes drive from Corncrake.
Uig museum & local history
Uig museum is open throughout the spring and summer months and has a wealth of information and artefacts on local history. Ardroil is most famous of course for the Uig Chessmen, and they were reportedly found somewhere in the dunes nearby to Corncrake itself. A really great place to get a feel for what life in Uig must have been like in times gone by take a look at the Uig Historical Society website.
